A town with one bridge and a lot of narrow lanes

Henley sits on the Thames with a single road bridge, and the lanes climbing away from the river towards Peppard and Fawley are narrow, high-hedged and unforgiving if a wheel wanders.

It's a town where getting the car out of the spot it's in is often harder than fixing the tyre. The centre is narrow, a lot of the parking is on-street and permit controlled, and the roads out climb steeply in nearly every direction. Driving a flat tyre to a garage from here is rarely as easy as it sounds, and if you're on the wrong side of the river it's harder still.

So we come to the car and fit the tyre where it's standing, whether that's a driveway on the Fair Mile or a car park off Bell Street.

Where we cover around Henley

RG9 and the roads out along the A4155 towards Marlow and the A4130 towards Nettlebed, plus the lanes up to Peppard Common and Sonning Common.

We come across from Burghfield through Reading and Caversham, or up through Sonning and Shiplake, depending on the traffic. Henley is a regular run for us, so give us the postcode and we'll confirm a time.

New tyres

Budget, mid-range and premium from the main manufacturers, fitted and balanced where the car's parked in Henley on Thames.

Puncture repair

A nail in the tread is usually repairable. We'll have a proper look before deciding either way.

Part worn tyres

A fair option if the car's going soon or money's tight this month. If a budget new tyre works out better value, we'll say so.

What we see round here

Flint in the lanes around Henley

The Chiltern lanes around Henley sit on chalk and flint, and a flint shard is sharp enough to go straight through a tyre. It usually goes in at an angle through the shoulder, which is the one place a repair can't be done.

The hills out of Henley, and the lanes

Every road out of Henley apart from the one along the river climbs, and some of them climb hard. That's fine for tyres in itself, but it changes what happens when one goes. Stopping safely on a steep, narrow, tree-lined climb is a lot more awkward than stopping on the flat.

The lanes are the other half of it. Get off the main roads towards Stonor, Bix, Rotherfield or Harpsden and the surfaces go downhill quickly. Soft edges crumble away over winter, potholes open up at the margins, and there's often nowhere to put two wheels that isn't either a hedge or a hole.

Drop a wheel into a broken edge at speed and the sidewall gets pinched against the rim. That's the usual route to a bulge in a tyre that was perfectly sound that morning.

Where we cover around Henley

RG9 across the town and out to Remenham, Shiplake, Harpsden, Lower Shiplake, Binfield Heath and the villages up towards Nettlebed and Stonor.

Peppard Common, Sonning Common and Woodcote are just west of here and we cover all of them, so the whole triangle between Henley, Reading and Wallingford is normal territory for us.

In the town centre, tell us the street when you ring. Some of the older roads just won't take a van parked alongside, and we'd much rather work that out on the phone than find out when we get there.

Questions we get asked

Yes. Tell us what the access is like and we'll say on the phone whether the van will get down there.
