What the shake actually is
No wheel and tyre is perfectly even. A few grams heavier in one spot is enough that, at motorway speed, the wheel is being thrown off centre dozens of times a second.
You feel it as a vibration. Through the steering wheel if it's a front wheel, through the seat and the floor if it's a rear one. It usually comes in at a particular speed and eases off above and below it.
Why it's worth fixing instead of living with
An out-of-balance wheel wears the tyre in patches instead of evenly, so you end up replacing it earlier than you should. It also puts a constant hammering through the wheel bearings, the suspension bushes and the steering.
Balancing itself is a small job. The damage it prevents isn't.
How we do it
The wheel comes off and goes on the balancer in the van, which tells us where the weight needs to go. We fit it, check it again and torque the wheel back up.

Same machine any depot uses, and we use stick-on weights on alloys so nothing shows on the face of the wheel.
After a pothole
A buckled rim won't hold a balance
If the vibration is there at every speed, instead of coming in at one particular speed, it's more likely a buckled wheel or a worn part than a balance problem. We'll tell you what we find. We're not going to balance something that was never going to be fixed by weights.
